The Donald J. Sutherland Lecture Series Presents

Richard Blanco
President Obama's Inaugural Poet 2013
Lambda Literary Award for Memoir

The Art of Home

Richard Blanco was made in Cuba, assembled in Spain, and imported to the United States—meaning his mother, seven months pregnant, and the rest of the family arrived as exiles from Cuba to Madrid where he was born. Only forty-five days later, they emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Miami.  His unique and complex genesis informs the central theme of his poetry, namely: home—and all that immense word encompasses and calls to mind. Blanco will share poems and remarks that speak to his never-ending journey to find home through the lens of his family and ethnicity as an immigrant, through his livelihood as a professional engineer, through his artistry as a poet, through his sexuality as a gay man, and through his Americanness as the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Poet. His work and life illuminate our universal longing for that proverbial home where we belong and can feel whole.
